Faith Believes. Trust Surrenders.

Key Scripture:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

One of the questions I’ve often reflected on during my own healing journey is this: What is the difference between faith and trust? We tend to use these words interchangeably, but while they work together, they are not the same.

Understanding the difference has helped me see that God isn’t only asking us to believe in Him—He’s inviting us to trust Him with the parts of our lives that still hurt.

Faith Believes

Faith is believing that God is who He says He is. It is believing His Word, His promises, and His character, even when our circumstances tell a different story.

Hebrews 11:1 reminds us:

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV)

Faith believes that God is still good in the middle of disappointment. It believes He is working even when we cannot see what He is doing.

Faith says:

  • I believe God loves me.
  • I believe God has a purpose for my life.
  • I believe God can heal my heart.
  • I believe His promises are true.

Trust Surrenders

Trust is what happens after faith.

Trust is choosing to place your life, your fears, your future, and even your unanswered questions into God’s hands.

Trust says:

“Lord, I don’t understand what You’re doing, but I believe You do.”

Trust often requires surrender.

It’s releasing the relationship you thought would last forever.

It’s grieving the dream that didn’t unfold the way you hoped.

It’s believing that even when life doesn’t make sense, God is still writing your story.

Faith believes.

Trust lets go.

The Bridge Between Faith and Healing

There have been seasons in my life when I had faith that God could heal my heart.

Trust came later.

Trust meant believing that even if God didn’t restore what I had lost, He could still restore me.

Sometimes we have faith for the miracle we want.

Trust is believing God even when the miracle looks different than we imagined.

That doesn’t mean we stop praying or stop hoping. It means we surrender the outcome to the One who sees what we cannot.

Living by Faith and Trust

There will be seasons when your faith is tested and your trust is stretched.

Perhaps you’re praying for healing after rejection.

Perhaps you’re grieving the life you thought you would have.

Perhaps you’re waiting for answers that haven’t come.

Take heart.

The same God who asks you to trust Him is the God who walks beside you every step of the journey. He never asks you to walk alone.

Reflection

Where is God inviting you to move beyond simply believing Him and into trusting Him completely?

What are you still trying to hold onto that He is gently asking you to place into His hands?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being faithful, even when I cannot see the whole picture. Strengthen my faith to believe Your promises, and deepen my trust so that I can surrender every fear, every disappointment, and every unanswered question to You.

Help me trust that Your plans are good, even when they look different from my own. Heal the places in my heart that struggle to let go, and teach me to rest in Your love, Your wisdom, and Your perfect timing.

Remind me that You are writing a story greater than I can imagine, and that I can safely place my life in Your hands.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Scripture for Reflection

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.”
Isaiah 26:3–4 (NIV)
